Choosing Kitchen Cabinentry That Works for You:

Cabinets
Choosing the kitchen cabinetry  is of the most important decisions you’ll have to make for your kitchen. Kitchen cabinets can be expensive and will usually have a big impact on your budget.  Ensure that you select cabinents that suit your storage needs, overall design, and budget. There are several factors highlighted below that should be taken into consideration when selecting cabinentry.

Budget

The first thing to consider is your budget. Because kitchen cabinets can be quite pricey,  you want to devise an ideal budget that you are willing to spend… and then litterally cut it in half. It is not that difficult to find some really nice discounted kitchen cabinets, just spendsome time online or in the stores looking for big discounts and great deals. If you have a larger budget, you might consider asking  for professional advice from interior designers or architects, who will often come to your home and give you a complimentary estimate.

Measurement

In addition to considering the budget, make sure that you take the measurements of the kitchen space for your cabinets. This is a very crucial step because it gives you an idea of the type of cabinets you will need to look for. This will also allow you to give more precise information to the salesman that will assist you at the cabinent manufacturer or home furnishings store. If you opt for professional advice, the architect or designer will usually measure this for you.

Cabinet Category

Another important choice you will need to make is the type of cabinent you will purchase. The choices are stock, semi-custom or custom cabinets. Stock cabinets are pre-manufactured, the least expensive and fastest to deliver.  They are made in the most popular finishes, sizes and materials but there are limited options and they cannot be customized. Semi-custom cabinets are built in standard sizes, with more options to pick from because they are built after you place your order. They are more expensive than the stock cabinets and not 100% customizable. The custom cabinets are built according to the customer’s specifications and tastes with no limitations, standard sizes or filler pieces. Though they are the most expensive and it takes some time to build them, they are of the highest quality and most tailored to your home’s individual design aesthetic.

Type of style

If you are not sure yet about what kind of style you want, you can start collecting some information and get an idea of the options from magazines or kitchen design books. By looking at pictures of different styles set up in different spaces and homes, you will get a better idea of what kind of style you want. A good suggestion would be to find a style that suits your homes architecture style and the interior design of the surrounding rooms. Usually the style of the kitchen cabinet just depends on the personal taste or materials that will match the kitchen’s overall look

Materials

Choice of materials and finish is the most visual decision you will make. You need to decide what type of material will be both functional and stylish for your kitchen. There are different materials to choose from including wood, metal and laminated. Wood is durable and comes in many colors, but it can contract due to humidity. Metal is very durable and easy to clean, but it’s more expensive than wood. Laminate is the least expensive and comes in nearly every color. The downside is in case of damage, its quite difficult to repair which may force you to replace your cabinents entirely.

The Design Side of Kitchen Cabinets

By: Kelly Goldthorpe

The entire process of kitchen renovations can be intimidating, but with kitchen cabinets there are especially a lot of things to consider when it comes to the cabinet design. Once you have your budget and measurements determined comes the hard part. Those are strict facts that you need to stick to, but the kitchen cabinet design process involves lots of decisions that aren’t so cut and dry. Designing kitchen cabinets involves the consideration of style, shelving, handles, and cabinet color. Together, these factors will evolve into beautiful cabinets that will enhance your kitchen.

Kitchen cabinet doors come in an endless amount of styles. From the very plain slab style that might be seen in a doctors office or science room that is essentially just a piece of wood, to intricate window work allowing the contents behind to be shown off. When you’re buying kitchen cabinets the cabinet design is the most important factor. You can easily change handles or paint color, but altering the cabinet door style involves more serious renovation. You can usually view what the cabinet and drawer will look like in showrooms or online, so consider both before you buy. You might like one but not the other and these are not typically things you can mix and match.

The shelving within cabinets can sometimes be customized as well. Make sure you have room for a variety of sized objects. Inevitably there is always a vase or small appliance you wish you could fit in the cabinets, but there just isn’t room. Whatever problems you had with your old cabinets, try to alter shelf heights to avoid them with your new cabinets. You can also install adjustable shelving units.

Kitchen cabinet handles are a small aspect of the overall design, but can be your biggest opportunity to incorporate your own personal style into the furnishings. If you go to your local home improvement store there are usually racks filled with different handle and knob choices. To add a quick update to your current cabinets you can just buy new handles! Make sure these are properly installed though; it can be very annoying if one falls off while you’re in a hurry.

The final factor with kitchen cabinet design is the color. Wood kitchen cabinets are so common because they come in different types of wood and can be stained for additional effect. If you want to paint your cabinets that is another option. To really highlight your cabinets consider installing cabinet lights. These add drama to your kitchen.

Buying kitchen cabinets or performing kitchen cabinet renovations creates the feel of a brand new kitchen. Consider every aspect of the purchasing process to get cabinets that make you happy and look great in your kitchen.
