Home Decorating Ideas: Master Bedroom

Your bedroom is your own private sanctuary, a place where you can enjoy quiet moments of relaxation, reflection and recharge your internal “batteries.” Here are some ideas on how to transform a master bedroom into a special retreat.  Consider the following before starting to redecorate your master bedroom.

Furniture

Before beginning your decoration project, make sure to measure the walls so you can have an idea of the size of the furniture you need to buy. If you have a small room, don’t choose a heavy and large bed- make sure to choose furniture that fits. On the other hand if your room is large, don’t choose small furniture and accessories.  They can look lost in a big room and will not optimize the space.

Color Palette

When it comes to colors for your bedroom, you should consider colors that you like the most in term of style and design, and ones that will create the mood you want to achieve. There are not colors that are better than others, it all depends on your personal tastes and impression, but there are some things to consider when choosing a color palette. Blue, lavender and green colors and their shadings are considered calm and peaceful. Toasty browns, deep pomegranate and topaz can create a comfortable, warm and relaxed atmosphere. Grays and blacks create a modern vibe but will also darken the room overall.

Lighting

Bedroom lights are very important and play a decisive role in any interior space. It is recommended to use multiple lighting sources in your master bedroom, both natural and artificial. Remember that sunlight should be a priority: any room that doesn’t have much sunlight is more likely to become a refuge for mold and termites. It’s good to have a major light in the ceiling or in the middle of the room, so that the entire space can be lightened. Small lamps should be placed on the nightstand, so that you can use them for reading. Ensure that all the artificial lights that you install in the room have a dimmer and a separate on/off switch.

Decorative Accessories

These are the touches that will express your personality and give life  to your room. These accessories include picture frames, family photos, wall clocks, paintings, wall hangings, flowers, etc. Choose accessories in your favorite colors or colors that will help set the mood you are trying to create in your bedroom.

Storage

To make the atmosphere of your bedroom calm and cozy, store your things out of sight. A great place to store items out of the way is under the bed- many beds are even designed with storage built in underneath. Benches at the end of the bed or visually appealing storage cubes, containers, and stools are also good options.

Aside from the aesthetics, a well-designed bedroom is a critical factor in restful sleep and your overall quality of life during the waking hours. Read More

How To: Combine Bedroom Styles

Combine Styles

By: Kelly Goldthorpe

Being in a relationship involves compromise, even with the decorating. When couples move in together for the first time they are welcomed with the harsh reality that their styles clash. He probably doesn’t enjoy the flower print duvet cover and she can’t stand the bachelor pad furniture he owns. This is the opportunity for the couple to work on combining styles and avoiding the overly feminine or blatantly masculine décor. The bedroom is a place where couples come together and redecorating allows both parties to express themselves.

Before you start your bedroom remodeling do some brainstorming. What style are you both trying to reach? Do you have a budget in mind? Do you want more fashion or functionality? Having these conversations allows you to go into the decoration process with a plan. If arguments arise throughout the process you can refer back to the ground rules you established at the beginning.

Like with most decoration, the color scheme is a critical aspect for setting the tone of the room. To create a gender-neutral room stay away from pinks or dark colors. Stick with softer tones like browns, beiges, and reds. This can come through in the wall color, carpet, and bedding. To add flair, incorporate small colorful touches in the accessories, like decorative pillows.

Once you have decided on a palette for your bedroom you can start the decorating process. Start with your biggest purchase, which is usually the bed. You want to have one focal point for the room and then design around that. For each additional item both you and your partner should have input and then weigh the options. Go with what you can both best agree upon.

Throughout the decorating process remember the bedroom is a shared space. Avoid frills, lace, and canopies. These can often be emasculating. Work on preserving both of your styles and combine them into one look. Find bedroom wall art that appeals to both of you, like a vibrant painting that has bright colors but also conveys a powerful message.

Ultimately, this is a process of compromising. Finding middle ground may be difficult, but if you work together and make it a joint experience your bedroom will reflect both of you.

Glamming up your Guest Room

Glam up your guestroom

By: Kelly Goldthorpe

When having guests you want to make their stay is as enjoyable as possible. Creating an inviting and comfortable guest room will make them feel at home. While you don’t need to hire a housekeeper or purchase monogrammed linens, there are some simple tricks that can make your spare bedroom feel like a top-of-the-line hotel.

To really make your guest room look amazing take the time to decorate it. Don’t let it just be the forgotten room that no one goes in. Consider the area you live in and, if possible, try to incorporate that into the décor. For a beach area create a soft color scheme with seashells and lighthouses. In a mountain home, develop a wilderness look. If you live in just an average town, use neutral tones or rich tones for the room. Bright or bold colors are not as universally appealing as a softer look.

The guest room should have the essentials of any room, such as a comfy bed and an end table. A queen size bed is the ideal size for guests because it will allow a couple to stay the night, not just one guest. An essential for a luxury guest room is freshly ironed linens. Having sheets specifically for the guest room, which doesn’t see daily use, will ensure they look new and unused.  Also have an extra blanket handy in case your guests get cold. On the end table include a lamp and an easy-to-use alarm clock.

If space permits, get a comfy chair and an ottoman for your guests to sit back and relax. If you anticipate long-term guests invest in a dresser with empty drawers. For short-term visitors provide a luggage rack. This is a cheap investment that really creates a feel of hotel luxury.

Once you’ve finished setting up your guest room, spend the night in it. You will actually experience the room and get a feel for it in a way that you can’t experience by just stopping in. Consider the air circulation, lighting, and noises that are present in the room. Also check that the electrical outlets are clearly visible, so your guests can charge their cell phones or other devices.

If you have a guest bathroom make sure it matches the feel that the guest bedroom creates. To do this, provide each of your guests their own set of towels, including washcloths. Again, purchase a separate set just for guests to maintain a fresh appearance. Keep your bathroom smelling pleasant by setting out potpourri.

A nice addition for your bathroom is a toiletry basket. Include things like toothbrushes and toothpaste, a razor, shampoo, soap, feminine products, asprin, and deodorant. Add anything that is commonly forgotten. This just shows that you are looking out for your guests.

A fun way to enhance your guest bathroom is to include a variety of sample products, like hand soaps and lotions. If you have a bathtub, also set out bubble bath or bath salts. These little luxuries will easily delight your guests.

Now consider what other things you can do to pamper your guest and make their stay enjoyable. Provide some in-room entertainment for them. This can be as simple as a few current magazines, a book of poems, or a religious text if you expect such visitors. If you live in an area with a lot of tourist attractions then round up some brochures. Some cities also have a magazine that highlights local events. A map and information on public transit also make for useful additions. A creative way for your guests to share their experiences is by putting out pre-stamped postcards from your area. Also have a guest book they can sign!

Welcome your guests with fresh flowers and a pitcher of ice water. These are personal touches that let the guest know you are there for them.

By doing these simple tricks you can easily turn your spare bedroom into a guestroom that feels like it belongs in a bed and breakfast. Be careful though, you might have visitors more frequently than you’d like if you make it too nice and word gets out!

Creating a Masculine Bedroom

Between ‘boyish’ and boring

Canopy netting, bed skirts, and decorative pillows – so much of the bedroom furnishings industry is targeted toward women and feminine designs. For men, decorating a bedroom that doesn’t appear too dark or scream ‘bachelor pad’ can be difficult. Especially with masculine bedrooms, there is a fine line between being stylish and being over the top.  A general rule of thumb of decorating is to consider if your mother would feel comfortable on a home tour.

Most certainly, when compared to a lady’s bedroom, a masculine bedroom will appear darker and bolder. This strong color palette is not a bad thing unless everything from the ceiling, to the curtains, to the sheets ends up black. Try to balance neutral, warm, and bold colors together. Using a rich wood, like mahogany, with dark blue, green, grey or black bedding will capture the masculine atmosphere without overdoing it. Stick to whites or creams for walls, but consider painting one wall a dark accent color. Window treatments are another opportunity to add a splash of color into the room.

The bedroom furnishings should be sleek and crisp without too much intricate detail. This helps create an edgy look. Platform beds have a modern design and look great in a masculine bedroom. A tall wardrobe may function better than a dresser. There should be different levels of lighting to set the mood of the room, from romantic to functional.

The bedroom wall art should also have a masculine tone to it. This can be sharp paintings, black and white prints, or framed album covers or movie posters. The room does not need to be bare and sparse to seem masculine; you can artfully incorporate accent pieces into the room.

Most importantly, stay away from the frills. Excessive pillows, house plants or flowers, and sheer or delicate fabrics distract from the masculine tone.

Developing the Sanctuary in Your Home: The Bedroom

Your home is your sanctuary; an escape from the outside world to rejuvenate yourself, both physically and mentally.  And within your home, the bedroom is even more specifically designed for this purpose.  That’s why it is important for you to design your bedroom to maximize relaxation and give yourself a chance to rest before going back out into the world.

The Bed Makes or Breaks the Bedroom

The entire room is named after this single piece of furniture, so it stands to reason that your bed is the most important part of the room.  Again, the bedroom is your “Fortress of Solitude,” an escape from everything else in the world that is yours, where you can reinvigorate your body.  And again, even more specifically, your bed is the most important part of this process.

Selecting the right bed and mattress is imperative, beginning with comfort, then moving to style, all the while keeping your budget in mind.  Durability, firmness, spacing, style, and utility all come into play when making your bedroom’s most important decision.  It is necessary to do your homework when making this selection, because the quality of your sleep can change who you are the next day.

A Master Bathroom Adds Value and Piece of Mind

Just as you may have already suspected, adding a master bathroom to your bedroom can both elevate your spirit and the value of your home.  It is proven that home owners with a master bathroom are more relaxed and better rested than their without master bathroom counterparts.  It’s about having what you need in your own, perfect sanctuary.

An Efficient Closet; Essential for Comfort

No one wants a cluttered anything, but especially bedroom.  Again, we’ll go back to the idea that the bedroom is your sanctuary and you don’t want things to be in disarray when you lay down at night.  Whether you have a walk-in closet or smaller, efficiency is the key to maximize your closet room to make sure you can fit all of your necessities in the space (shoes, clothes, etc).  There are many “closet systems” out there to make sure you get the most out of every nook and cranny of your closet.

Design: Keep It Simple

Could you sleep at a TGI Fridays?  Would you get much rest at Fuddruckers?  No, of course not!  These places are cluttered with an array of random things all over the walls.  They work for exciting atmosphere restaurants, but not for your bedroom.  Keep it simple.  And that doesn’t mean boring.  It just means that you should go with a theme and stick to it.  Stylish designs are great and can really bring out your creativity.  After all, it is your sanctuary.  Just don’t add too much to your room of “peace”, otherwise you’ll wind up going stir-crazy by staring at all the stuff on your walls all night.

The importance of the bedroom is not to be underestimated.  The whole reason for having a home isn’t about huge TVs and awesome sound systems . . . it’s a place to relax and rejuvenate yourself so you can go face the world for another day, and your bedroom is the place you do that.  Just remember that a good sanctuary can change who you are on a day-to-day basis.
